Sightings in 2005 The following butterfly species (those in bold) were seen in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 2005. The listed date is the first date seen in 2005. There have been records of 106 species seen in Berks County. The list below includes all those reported in 2003, 2004, and 2005, a total of 77 species. The four species seen in 2005, but not in 2003 or 2004 are shown in red. No doubt other species were present, but not seen. Some of the 106 species are historical records and many are of strays or southern migrants which are not often found in the county. Ninety one of the one hundred six species are known to have been seen in the past 40 years. The most notable sightings this year were those of the White-M Hairstreak, Giant Swallowtail, Ocola Skipper, Mulberry Wing, and Black Dash. Since 1997 the following six species have been added to the Berks County list: Sachem (a skipper), Broad-winged Skipper, Horace's Duskywing (a skipper), Ocola Skipper, Gray Comma, and Red-banded Hairstreak. None were added in 2005. |
